I’ve always been fascinated by how effortlessly tuba players do some of the things they do, when some of these things are hard work. So, poor technique is both effortless and hard, interfering with the tuba player’s freedom to play the most difficult tuba music with ease.
When an internalized poor technique is effortless, it can make it difficult to change, even when a tuba player discovers a better way to play. Why do many tuba players resist change for the better?
ONE OF THE WAYS OUR MINDS CAN BLOCK A CHANGE FOR THE BETTER, IS TO TELL US THAT IT IS TOO HARD TO MAKE TECHNIQUE CHANGES AFTER YEARS OF DOING WHAT THE TUBA PLAYER HAS DONE. IF THESE KINDS OF THOUGHTS ARE GOING ON IN YOUR HEAD, THEY CAN BE SELF-FULFILLING, MAKING CHANGES TO YOUR TECHNIQUE DIFFICULT.

The result is that gaining control of your tuba technique needed to be done as quickly as possible, no matter the physical and emotional costs.
